Fear of the Dark
Long before electric lights, night meant something very different.

When the sun disappeared, humans lost much of their ability to detect danger. A movement in the grass. A sound in the bushes. Something approaching from a distance — hidden until it was very close.
For a small human without claws, fangs, or great speed, detecting danger early could mean everything.
This may help explain why darkness can still make many people uneasy.
Fear is not always a response to something we can actually see.
The brain is constantly trying to predict possible threats. When visual information is limited, uncertainty grows. A harmless sound becomes harder to identify. An ordinary shadow can be mistaken for something else. The imagination begins filling in what the eyes cannot confirm.
This is why darkness can make people more alert.
Some researchers have suggested that the human tendency to be more cautious in darkness may have roots in the environments our ancestors lived in. Night reduced visibility. It may have increased the difficulty of detecting predators, hostile individuals, or other dangers.
But evolution does not mean that every fear of the dark is a simple, inherited "fear of predators."
Human fear is shaped by many things: childhood experiences, imagination, culture, personal memories, and the brain's response to uncertainty.
The modern world has changed faster than the human nervous system.
A dark bedroom is usually not a dangerous forest. A sound outside the window is more likely to be a vehicle, a neighbour, or the wind than a predator moving through the trees.
And yet, when the lights go out, the brain may still become a little more watchful. Not necessarily because it knows that something is there. Perhaps because it knows that, in the dark, it cannot be completely sure that nothing is.
Maybe that is why darkness can feel different from simply closing our eyes.
With our eyes closed, we know what we cannot see.
In the dark, we are not always sure what we might be missing.
