But perhaps something remarkable is happening.

Human beings are born knowing very little about the complicated environment they must eventually navigate.
A newborn does not know what fire is. Or what food is safe. Or which sounds mean danger. Or how people communicate. Or why one object falls while another floats.
Almost everything must be learned.

And children seem to approach this enormous unknown with an extraordinary willingness to investigate.
They touch things. Taste things. Take things apart. Watch what happens. Ask questions. Then ask better questions.
Curiosity is not simply a desire to collect facts. It is a drive to reduce uncertainty.
A child sees something unexpected. The mind notices that its understanding of the world is incomplete.
And a question appears. "Why?"

In this sense, curiosity may have had enormous value for humans. Our ancestors had to learn about changing environments, unfamiliar plants and animals, tools, weather, other people, and countless dangers.
A curious individual might discover something useful. A new source of food. A safer route. A better way to make a tool. A new way to solve a problem.
Psychologists call this information gap theory. Curiosity arises when there is a gap between what we know and what we want to know. The mind finds this gap uncomfortable — and asking "why" is how we close it. Children, facing a world full of gaps, are curiosity in its purest form.

But curiosity can also be dangerous. A child who investigates everything may touch something hot. Wander too far. Or pick up something that should have been left alone.
So children also need adults.

Perhaps this is one reason children ask so many questions. They are not merely collecting answers. They are building a model of reality.
A child's brain is constantly trying to understand:
What is this?
What does it do?
What happens if I try this?
What happens if I do not?
The questions may sometimes seem obvious to an adult. Why is the sky blue? Why can't I fly? Why does the moon follow us? Why must I go to sleep?
But the adult already has a map of the world.
The child is still drawing one.

Information Is Not Understanding
The modern world gives children more information than any previous generation could have imagined. Answers are available almost instantly. A question can be typed into a search box and answered in seconds.
But information is not the same as understanding.
A child may know the answer to a question and still ask another. Because curiosity is not always looking for a final answer.
Sometimes it is looking for the next question.

And perhaps adults do not lose curiosity completely. We simply learn to suppress it. We become accustomed to things that once seemed astonishing. The sky. The moon. The human body. Language. Memory. The fact that we are here at all.
A child may stop in the middle of a walk to examine an insect. An adult may walk past without noticing.
The child is not necessarily seeing a more interesting world.
Perhaps the child is seeing a world that has not yet become familiar.
And that may be one of the quiet gifts of childhood. To meet ordinary things as if they are extraordinary.
Because, in a way, they are.
